Muskegon, MI – Cole's Quality Foods announced plans today to attempt to set a Guiness World Record at the upcoming Taste of Muskegon. The bread maker is planning to bake a garlic bread that will be the largest on record. The bread will be on display throughout the two-day event, which runs June 20 and 21 in downtown Muskegon.

The idea to set such a record came about when Taste of Muskegon organizers, including Muskegon Sesquicentennial activist Bryan Chapman, were talking to officials at Cole's, the event’s title sponsor, early in 2009, and were brainstorming ways to tie the event into Muskegon County’s 150th Birthday Celebration. The conversation turned to baking a bread that related to the number 150 , and that’s when the idea was hatched to pursue not only a birthday memento, but a Guiness World Record. “Our operations team was totally excited by the challenge,” stated John Sommavilla, CEO of Cole's Quality Foods, “and we think the result will be amazing.” Cole's has been working with the publishers of Guiness World Records since February to have the effort properly authenticated and verified.

The 150-inch-long bread will be baked in a custom-fabricated pan at the Cole's production facility in downtown Muskegon, and will be transported fully cooked to the Taste of Muskegon to be unveiled when the event opens June 20 at 11:00 a.m. The gigantic loaf will be on display at the Cole’s booth throughout out the event, and while patrons won’t be able to sample the actual loaf, they will be able to sample other Cole’s products.

“Cole’s has been a great partner for our event,” said Brent Mullen, Taste of Muskegon Chair, “and we are delighted they are going to draw attention to the Taste and the history of Muskegon County at our event.” The Taste of Muskegon is a fast-growing event that features 25 Muskegon restaurants in a street festival atmosphere, along with a Michigan Beer & Wine Taste Garden, and a Cooking Demonstration Stage presented by Mia & Grace.
